In Saudi Arabia, one out of three adults suffers from obesity and at least one out of ten adults has morbid obesity. One of the evidence-based recommendations is performing bariatric surgeries for those with morbid obesity. It is estimated that 15,000 bariatric operations are performed annually in Saudi Arabia. The cost of operation depends on its type and experience of surgeon. The cost ranges from 30,000 to 40,000 SR ($8000-10,600).
Unfortunately, in many medical centers, operations have been done under questionable surgical circumstances which made patient at high risk of complications and sometime death of patients.
There are many underlying reasons stand behind this phenomenon. The first and the most important factor is lacking of standards at medical centers at which operations are done, in addition to shortage of surgeons with good experience in bariatric surgery.
To make bariatric surgery as safe and cost-effective, high authority in the Ministry of Health, Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, and Saudi Arabian Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery should work together (urgently) to issue relevant standards, regulations, guidelines, and implementation of accreditation and re-accreditation regarding bariatric surgery centers all over Saudi Arabia.
