The preconference workshop started with the opening ceremony hosted by Prince Sultan Bin Abdul-Aziz Humanitarian City (SBAHC) under the patronage of H.E. Prof. Ayaman Abdo, Secretary-General of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). The first speech was made by Mr Abdulaziz Alsubail representing the CEO of SBAHC, who presented the vision and mission of city describing its contributions to the community in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with all kind of handicaps including the surgical center of excellence accredited by the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (IFSO), which serve obese patients with top quality care using the multidisciplinary team approach. The following speech presented by Prof Adnan Mofti, president of the Saudi Arabian Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (SASMBS), highlighting its vision and mission, roles and responsibilities of the various committees, and related programs to combat obesity in the society. The next speech by H.E. Prof Ayman Abdo addressed the problem of obesity in the society, and the SCFHS roles and support of the various health professional societies including commending the SASMBS.
Prof Mohammed Alnaāmi, the chairman of the scientific and organizing committee concluded the opening ceremony by thanking all speakers and participants, the administration of SBAHC for hosting the workshop and the forum, all supporting companies, and distributed the awards. Also, he introduced the preforum workshop program by a short presentation on “Interprofessional system approach to obesity prevention and control: concept and implications.” Then, the workshop participants divided into three groups: the strategies, guidelines, and policies themes. Each group has discussed current evidence and best practices and interventions to prevent and control obesity locally and internationally and came up with the following recommendations.

1. To form a task-force committee to review all previous important international and national strategies to combat obesity.
2. They will also include content experts and strategies expert.
3. This task force will form different subgroups in different disciplines related to obesity.
4. The task force will formulate the finalized strategies and submit it to the Saudi CDC to formulate a national experts’ committee, to recruit and outsource from different agencies, find resources, and execute strategies.

1. To create a task force inclusive of all members of the MDT: dietitians, obesity medicine specialists, endocrinologists, physical therapists, and metabolic surgeons to create standardized clinical practice guidelines for metabolic surgery.
2. The task force should undergo formal training on how to develop guidelines.
3. The task force will rate the quality of evidence available for each recommendation and grade it accordingly.
4. The proposed guidelines will adopt international guidelines but will add cultural modifications when required.
5. The task force will tackle the perception of obesity in our culture as a major challenge and will design clinical guidelines that are patient-centered and culture sensitive.
6. The guidelines will be endorsed not only by SASMBS, but also will seek endorsement by different local societies (e.g., Saudi endocrine society, nutrition, etc.)
7. The guidelines should be endorsed by the Health Services Council in order to implement nationwide.
8. The guidelines should include both pre- and postmetabolic surgery management and management of metabolic surgery emergencies and possible complications.
